Plastic is relatively soft. If you use a very fine blade (like 24T or 32T), the friction can heat the plastic, causing it to melt and clog the small teeth.
The 18T advantage: The larger gaps (gullets) allow the plastic "chips" to fall away without gumming up the blade. It also cuts much faster through thick PVC or ABS pipes.
When cutting metal, the most important rule is the "3-Teeth Rule": you should always have at least 3 teeth in contact with the material at all times.
The 24T advantage: If you use an 18T blade on thin metal, the teeth are so far apart they can "straddle" the edge of the metal, causing the saw to catch, jar, or even snap a tooth. The 24T provides enough teeth-per-inch to glide smoothly through most standard metal thicknesses.
Direction Matters: Ensure the teeth are pointing forward (away from the handle).
Tension is Key: Bahco Sandflex blades are Bi-Metal (spring steel back with HSS teeth).
The 18T Exception: If you are cutting very thick metal (like a solid 1-inch steel bar), an 18T blade is actually better because it removes more material per stroke and won't overheat as quickly.
