Turpentine is a volatile, oily, and odorous liquid solvent primarily derived from the distillation of resin harvested from pine trees. It is frequently sold as an Oil-Based Thinner (sometimes colloquially referred to as Minyak Tanah in some regions, though chemically distinct from kerosene).
Composition: Turpentine is naturally composed of terpenes, mainly $alpha$-pinene and $beta$-pinene, which give it its characteristic strong, pine-like scent.
Primary Use (Painting): It acts as a specialized, slow-drying solvent for thinning high-gloss enamels, oil-based paints, varnishes, and traditional woodworking finishes. Unlike synthetic thinners, painters often prefer its slow-drying nature for achieving smoother finishes.
Secondary Uses: It is used extensively as a cleaner for brushes and rollers used with oil-based paints, as well as a general lubricant and cleaning agent for removing stubborn stains, waxes, and oil residues.
Color and Form: It is typically a clear liquid, which may sometimes have a slight yellowish tint.
