England Triangle brand hand taps are reliable, entry-level threading tools designed primarily for maintenance, repair, and general DIY projects. Manufactured from high-quality carbon steel, these taps are best suited for manual threading operations in softer materials.
Material: High-Carbon Steel (HCS)
Size Range: M3 to M30 (Metric Coarse)
Thread Type: Metric (MM)
Set Composition: Usually sold as a set of 3 (Taper, Second/Plug, and Bottoming)
Flute Design: Straight flute (ideal for through holes or blind holes in brittle materials)
Because these taps are made of Carbon Steel rather than High-Speed Steel (HSS), they have specific limitations:
Ideal Materials: Mild steel, aluminum, brass, copper, plastics, and cast iron.
Not Recommended For: Stainless steel, alloy steels, or high-volume production (these require HSS or Cobalt taps).
Operation: Manual use with a Tap Wrench. They are not designed for high-speed machine tapping as carbon steel loses its hardness at high temperatures.
When you purchase these in sets, each tap serves a specific stage of the process:
Taper Tap (First): Has a long lead (8–10 threads) to help align the tap and start the thread easily.
Second/Plug Tap: Has a shorter lead (3–5 threads). Used to deepen the thread after the taper tap.
Bottoming Tap: Has very few lead threads (1–2). Used to cut threads to the very bottom of a "blind" hole.
Pro Tip: Always use tapping oil or a suitable lubricant to reduce friction and prevent the carbon steel from snapping, especially in sizes below M6.
