The SKC Japan Round Die No. 820 is specifically designed for pipe threading. Unlike the No. 822 (which is for standard bolts like BSW), the 820 series is used for Pipe Threads (BSPT/NPT).
In your specific request for 1-1/2", there is an important distinction to make between the Thread Size and the Outside Diameter (OD) of the die itself.
Thread Type: BSPT (British Standard Pipe Taper). This is a tapered thread (1:16 ratio) used to create pressure-tight seals in plumbing and hydraulic systems.
Thread Angle: 55°.
Material: SKS (Alloy Tool Steel / High Carbon Steel).
Model Number: No. 820 (Adjustable Round Die for Pipe).
In the SKC catalog, "1-1/2" can refer to two different things. Please check your die for the following:
| If 1-1/2" is the... | What it means |
| Outside Diameter (OD) | This is a small die designed to fit a standard 1-1/2" die stock. It usually cuts pipe sizes of 1/8", 1/4", 3/8", or 1/2" BSPT. |
| Nominal Pipe Size | This is a very large die (often 3" or 4" OD) designed to cut threads onto a 1-1/2" diameter pipe. This size typically has 11 TPI (Threads Per Inch). |
If you have a die stock handle that is 1-1/2" wide, these are the common BSPT sizes SKC produces to fit it:
1/8" x 28 TPI (OD: 1-1/2")
1/4" x 19 TPI (OD: 1-1/2")
3/8" x 19 TPI (OD: 1-1/2")
1/2" x 14 TPI (OD: 1-1/2")
Because BSPT is a tapered thread, the die is designed to cut deeper as it moves along the pipe.
Entry Side: Always start threading from the side of the die with the larger chamfer (the lead-in).
Adjusting: If the pipe is not fitting into the female fitting deeply enough, use the adjustment screw on the die to close the split slightly, which will cut a deeper thread.
